Klingle Road

Klingle Road

Klingle Road is a street in a narrow valley in Washington, D.C.. The valley forms the boundary between the Woodley Park neighborhood to the south and the Cleveland Park neighborhood to the north. A small stream, usually called the Klingle Tributary, flows through it, and empties into Rock Creek. Much of the valley is administered as a part of Rock Creek Park. The mouth of the valley joins the mouth of another narrow valley occupied by Porter Street. Klingle Road passes under Connecticut Avenue, which is carried over the valley on a high bridge; there is no direct access between the two roadways.

The roadway allowed residents of areas east of Rock Creek Park to reach Wisconsin Avenue, providing relatively quick access to Georgetown, the National Cathedral, and several schools in the valley and near its western end. With the roadway closed, Porter Street carries this traffic.

A section of the roadway was closed in 1991 after erosion severely damaged a 3/4 mile (1.2 km) segment. [Jonathan Abel. " [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/22/AR2005072200027.html D.C. Weighs Options for Opening Klingle Rd] ", "The Washington Post", July 22 2005, pp. B05. Retrieved on 2008-06-15] The easternmost section of the roadway remains open to serve a small number of houses atop the north side of the valley. Some people have tried to get the District to rebuild the destroyed section and a grassroots campaign was started. [http://www.repairklingleroad.org/] A competing grassroots campaign agitated for replacing the road with a bicycle, hiking, or bridle path, said to be quieter, nonpolluting uses. In May 2008, the D.C. City Council, reversing a decision made two years previously, voted against reopening the road. At that time, a bicycle trail seemed likely.
