Theodoridas of Syracuse

Theodoridas of Syracuse

Theodoridas (Gr. polytonic|Θεοδωρίδας) was a lyric and epigrammatic poet from Syracuse, who is supposed to have lived at the same time as Euphorion, that is, about 235 BC;Citation | last = Smith | first = Philip | author-link = | contribution = Theodoridas (2) | editor-last = Smith | editor-first = William | title = Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology | volume = 3 | pages = 1045 | publisher = | place = Boston | year = 1867 | contribution-url = http://www.ancientlibrary.com/smith-bio/3378.html ] for, on the one hand, Euphorion is mentioned in one of the epigrams of Theodoridas, ["Ep." ix] and, on the other hand, Clement of Alexandria quotes a verse of Euphorion polytonic|ἐν ταῖς πρὸς Θεωρίδαν ἀντιγραφαῖς, where Schneider suggests the emendation polytonic|Θεοδωρίδαν. [Clement of Alexandria, "Stromata" v. p. 673]

He had a place in the "Garland" of Meleager. In addition to the eighteen epigrams ascribed to him in the Greek Anthology, about the genuineness of some of which there are doubts, [Richard François Philippe Brunck, "Anal." vol. ii. p. 41] [Jacobs, "Anth. Graec." vol. ii. p. 42, vol. xiii. p. 959] he wrote a lyric poem polytonic|Εἰς Ἔρωτα, upon which a commentary was written by Dionysius, named polytonic|ὁ Λεπτός, ["Ath." xi. p. 475, f] a dithyramb titled "The Centaurs" (polytonic|Κένταυροι), ["Ath." xv. p. 699] [Eustathius, "On Odysseus" p. 1571, 16] licentious verses of the kind called polytonic|φλύακες, [Suda "s.v." polytonic|Σωτάδης, as corrected by Augustus Meineke, "Anal. Alex." p. 246] and some other poems, of which we have a few fragments, but not the titles. The name is more than once confused with Theodorus (polytonic|Θεόδωρος) and Theodoritos (polytonic|Θεοδώριτος). [Johann Albert Fabricius, "Bibl. Graec." vol. iv. p. 496] [Bode, "Gesch. d. Hellen. Dichtkunst", vol. ii. pt. 2, p. 333] [Ulrici, vol. ii. p. 613] [Schmidt, "Diatribe in Dithyramb", pp. 147— 150]
