The place is known since end of 14th century (1375 mentioned in
Teutonic Knights Chronicles as Staghelisken, 1385 as Stakelisken). Since 1513 it was a town, and 1586 firt church was built.After reforms of the
Great Sejm , on January 16, 1792 monarchStanisław August Poniatowski granted the townMagdeburg Rights . At the time city was awardedCoat of Arms .Current coat of arms was granted by Presidential decree on December 18, 1997.
