Wilma Lipp

Wilma Lipp

Wilma Lipp (April 26, 1925, Vienna) is an Austrian operatic soprano, particularly associated with Mozart roles, especially Konstanze and the Queen of the Night.

She studied in Vienna with Anne Bahr-Mildenburg and Alfred Jerger, and made her debut there as Rosina in 1943, and joined the Vienna State Opera in 1945. She won considerable fame as the Queen of the Night, which she sang at La Scala in Milan, in 1950, and at the Paris Opera in 1953. She appeared at the Royal Opera House in London, as Gilda, and at the Glyndebourne Festival, as Konstanze, in 1957. She made her American debut as Nanetta, at the San Francisco Opera, in 1962.

Her career, which began in soubrette and high coloratura roles, later progressed to more lyrical ones such as Ilia, Countess Almaviva, Pamina, Eva, Musetta, Martha, Violetta, etc.

Lipp possessed a pure and sweet voice with an accurate coloratura technique.
