Wilma Lipp (
April 26 ,1925 ,Vienna ) is an Austrian operaticsoprano , particularly associated withMozart roles, especially Konstanze and the Queen of the Night.She studied in Vienna with Anne Bahr-Mildenburg and Alfred Jerger, and made her debut there as Rosina in 1943, and joined the
Vienna State Opera in 1945. She won considerable fame as the Queen of the Night, which she sang atLa Scala in Milan, in 1950, and at theParis Opera in 1953. She appeared at theRoyal Opera House in London, as Gilda, and at theGlyndebourne Festival , as Konstanze, in 1957. She made her American debut as Nanetta, at theSan Francisco Opera , in 1962.Her career, which began in
soubrette and highcoloratura roles, later progressed to more lyrical ones such as Ilia, Countess Almaviva, Pamina, Eva, Musetta, Martha, Violetta, etc.Lipp possessed a pure and sweet voice with an accurate coloratura technique.
