Kadena High School

Kadena High School is on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan and is administered by DoDEA. It opened in 1981. The School is mainly for American military dependents to attend an English speaking school grade levels 9-12. The School is located near the East Entrance of Gate 5 with Kadena Middle School on the West Side of the Gate. The School has a main building where most classes and activities are performed, but due to a large number of students an additional 2-Story building called "The Annex" was added. The school's mascot is the panther.

Other American Military dependent High Schools on Okinawa are Kubasaki High School, considered to be Kadena High School's arch rivals, and the private Okinawa Christian School International, or OCSI.

Incidents

On January 31, 2001, Kadena students became involved in the 2001 Japan Airlines mid-air incident.

13 students boarded Japan Airlines Flight 907, bound for Naha International Airport in Naha, Okinawa from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan, after returning from a school-sanctioned ROTC competition. The pilot of the Boeing 747-400 used for Flight 907 dived to avoid a Japan Airlines Douglas DC-10, and the 747 returned to Tokyo with some injured passengers. Information

When the school was established in 1981, the original mascot was the Pegasus. After major consideration, the school then changed to the panther. The primary and secondary colors that the school is represented by is Black and Gold.

The school is renowned for their sports forte, winning mostly all of the Far East competitions.

The school is currently the largest DODDS school, annually enrolling over 800 students. A lot of the students become involved in school spirit activities and events, which isn't common in normal DODDS schools.
