Kings Park Sporting Precinct

Kings Park Sporting Precinct is a site located in Stamford Hill, Durban, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It is being developed primarily the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but is also used for other events such as national and international swimming galas and rugby matches.

The Kings Park Sporting Precinct is managed by the City of Durban.

Recent Developments

Currently, the Moses Mabhida stadium is under construction, involving massive regeneration of the surrounding infrastructure. This will include a pedestrian bridge over NMR Avenue to Oasis/Country Club Beach in the east. In terms of cultural facilities, the stadium will also contain a sports museum, a multi-media centre and a sports science institute operated by the University of KwaZulu Natal. It is expected that Walter Gilbert Road, between Moses Mabhida and ABSA Stadia will be pedestrianised.

Events

Currently, events held in the precinct are dominated by athletics and rugby. ABSA Stadium and Collegians Athletics Stadium regularly hold events, which are ongoing through the construction process. The precinct also hosts aquatic events at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre, as well as the A1 Grand Prix (the only street circuit in the series), Spar 10Km Ladies Race and many functions at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World.

Facilities

The Kings Park Sporting Precinct currently has the capability to host 42 Olympic Codes and is just under 2km from Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Stadium and the Greyville Racecourse, home of the Durban July.

Transport

The precinct is served by a railway line and two stations, Umgeni and Durban. The M4 provides road access up the north coast and the M12 to the city centre. The R102 (M19) runs inland towards Westville It is also expected that a new train sation will be built before 2010 in close proximity to the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
