As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,548 people, 1,539 households, and 980 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 837.6 people per square mile (323.1/km²). There were 1,764 housing units at an average density of 416.4/sq mi (160.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.00% White, 0.31% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 1.89% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.54% of the population.There were 1,539 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the town the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,208, and the median income for a family was $42,623. Males had a median income of $34,940 versus $20,185 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $19,069. About 6.9% of families and 8.9% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 9.9% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.The official newspaper of Wheatland is the Platte County Record Times, a weekly publication. It covers news of the whole county, and in July of 2008 has approximately 1,100 paid subscribers. The unofficial "alternative" newspaper of Wheatland is the Wheaterville News, an online publication covering all of Platte County, with separate sections for Glendo and Guernsey.
