Samsø municipality is a municipality (Danish, "kommune") in
Region Midtjylland on the island ofSamsø in centralDenmark . The island is located in theKattegat between the Danishmainland ofJutland and the island ofZealand ("Sjælland"). The municipality includes the small island ofHjortholm off its northeast coast, and it covers an area of 114 km². It has a total population of 4.085 (2008). Its mayor is Carsten Bruun, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.The site of its municipal council is the town of Tranebjerg.
Because Samsø is an island municipality,
Odder to the west on the Jutland peninsula is its only neighboring municipality. To the east of the island is Samsø Belt ("Samsø Bælt"), thestrait that separates the island of Samsø from the island of Zealand.Ferry service connects the municipality near the town of Sælvig west-northwest over the Kattegat to the town of Hov on the Jutland peninsula, and at the town of Kolby Kås east-southeast over theGreat Belt to the city ofKalundborg on Zealand.Samsø municipality was not merged with other municipalities by
January 1 ,2007 as the result of nationwide "Kommunalreformen" ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007).External links
