Cypress Hills College is a community college based in Swift Current, Saskatchewan that provides post-secondary education in the southwest region of the province. This college and Prairie West College will merge to create a new institution called Great Plains College starting July 1, 2008. [http://www.cypresshillscollege.sk.ca/news.php?newsid=30 Cypress Hills College ] ] The new name reflects both the geography and the aspirations of the region given the booming economy of the area. The slogan of the new college is “Education with Energy” to reflect not only the spirit of the new institution but also a renewed focus on the opportunities in the energy sector.

Programs

The college provides certificate and diploma programs in a variety of fields and trades. A limited number of university courses are offered at the College in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina.

Campuses

The main campus of Cypress Hills College is located in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, with rural campuses in Gravelbourg, Maple Creek and Shaunavon.

Great Plains College will have nine campuses: Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Gravelbourg, Maple Creek; Shaunavon; Biggar; Kindersley; Outlook; Rosetown and Warman.

History

Cypress Hills College and Prairie West College announced March 4th, 2008 their intention to merge the two institutions into a new college to be called Great Plains College. The goal of the merger is to enhance and expand the programs and services for students who attend campuses in communities across western Saskatchewan from Warman to Maple Creek. The merger will result in no job losses or campus closures. Current programming is not impacted by the merger, which still requires approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour.

Mission

"Regional colleges provide education and skills training that meets the needs of the communities and employers it serves. We were both looking for ways to expand to take advantage of the booming economy. We realized we could do more together," said Mark Frison, Cypress Hills College President. "We have partnered together in past in the energy sector and we intend to do more in that area. There is a demand out there that we can meet. We are merging to grow," said Bruce Probert, Prairie West College CEO.

Programs

Regional college students are able to receive, in their region, post-secondary education and skills training which is responsive to local employer needs. Cypress Hills College offers a variety of programs such as University, Applied Arts & Technology, Trades and Safety Training. [http://tools.canlearn.ca/]
