The Sagle Bernstein legacy
A Cromer resident by the name of Mrs Sagle Bernstein left a substantial legacy to Cromer and District Hospital in 2001[2]. The sum was £11.4 million which she left because of the excellent care that her sister had received as a patient at the hospital. The terms of Mrs Bernstein’s will were that it is to be spent on “improvement of general facilities” and the legacy can only be spent at Cromer Hospital. It is planned that a new hospital will be built on the site of the present hospital. The legacy is to be used towards the cost of building and equipping the new hospital. £500,000 of the legacy has already been spent on an eight-station renal dialysis unit which opened in June 2006[3]. The dialysis unit was relocated in the refurbished Barclay ward in January 2011. [4]
The new Cromer and District Hospital
A feasibility study undertaken in 2006 demonstrated that it would be possible to redevelop the existing hospital site and to relocate existing services into the new hospital whilst creating minimal disruption to most existing services.
The tender for the new hospital was won by Mansell which is a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty and a planning application was submitted to North Norfolk District Council in November 2008.[5] It is expected that work will begin in 2009 with the new hospital completed in 2011. The hospital is being designed by architects Purcell Miller Tritton and a Swaffham-based Mansell team will undertake the construction work.
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced on July 28 2008, that the long-awaited new hospital would cost £26 million: £14 million of the Bernstein legacy money and £12 million of the NHS Foundation Trust's own funds. The work was scheduled to be completed by 2011.[6] [7]
In June 2009 the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust announced the project would be scaled back to a £15 million project. The decision was reportedly taken as result of the global recession and pressure on public spending.
On May 12 2010, North Norfolk District Council granted planning permission for the new £15 million hospital and construction work started in Autumn 2010 with completion due by Autumn 2012. BBC News, Work starts on new Cromer Hospital
