Sir Brandon Gough (born 1937) is
Chancellor of theUniversity of East Anglia .Sir Brandon is currently Chairman of
De La Rue plc , a global leader in the banknote and cash handling technology business. His links with higher education stretch back to 1993 when he was appointed as chair of theHigher Education Funding Council for England and oversaw the bringing together of the university and polytechnic sectors. He has also served on the Council ofCity University and the influential Council for Industry and Higher Education."We are delighted that Sir Brandon has agreed to join us as Chancellor," commented Professor David Eastwood, UEA's former vice-chancellor. "He brings a singular and highly desirable balance of corporate, commercial and educational expertise from his distinguished career. There is no doubt that his knowledge and business reputation will be a huge asset to UEA as we build on our international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and knowledge transfer."
Brandon Gough's career began with
Coopers & Lybrand . Until 1983 he was engaged on both the business and professional development sides of audit and financial advice. He was elected Chairman in 1983 and became responsible to the partners for the strategic direction of the firm during a period of major change and growth for the accountancy profession. He made a significant contribution to the organisation's global and European development and oversaw the merger with Deloitte Haskins and Sells in 1990. He has also served as Chairman ofYorkshire Water (nowKelda Group plc ) and Deputy Chairman of SG Warburg Group plc."Universities are at the heart of the UK's ability to compete in a global knowledge economy. I will enjoy working with world-class academic colleagues as well as taking part in the range of ceremonial duties involved in being Chancellor," said Sir Brandon. "My predecessor as Chancellor, Sir Geoffrey Allen, who is retiring from the role after 10 enormously successful year has set very high standards in his contribution to UEA. I look forward to playing my part in promoting the University in the future."
Sir Brandon has held a number of public and charitable appointments including chair of the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' remuneration for eight years from 1993 and chair of the Common Purpose Charitable Trust. He was knighted in the New Years Honours of 2002 for his public service.
Sir Brandon Gough is married with three children and seven grandchildren. He currently lives in
Weald ,Kent .
