It gets its name from the area in which it is situated, Dunlewey. It sits under the tallest peak in Co. Donegal, Mount Errigal. It also has a crannóg.
The shores of the lake is home to a popular tourist centre, Ionad Cois Locha,(Gaeilge for Lakeside Centre), from where boat trips of the lake can be organised.
