WFME is a radio station on 94.7 MHz FM licensed to Newark, New Jersey that serves the New York City metropolitan area with Christian education, music and fellowship. It is owned by Family Stations Inc. aka Family Radio, a non-profit organization led by Harold Camping. The studio, office and transmitter is located in West Orange, New Jersey.

The station airs local community announcements, weather and traffic as well as programs, such as Creation Moments, Positive Parenting, Beyond Intelligent Design, and Open Forum, originating from Family Radio headquarters in Oakland, California.

History

94.7 FM signed on in 1947 as WAAT-FM. In 1958 it became WNTA-FM and was co-owned with 13 WNTA-TV (now WNET) and AM 970 WNTA (now WWDJ). WNTA-FM had diversified programming such as jazz, classical music, and easy listening music. After its owner sold Channel 13 and AM 970, 94.7 became WJRZ-FM in 1962. They began selling some airtime to Family Radio beginning in 1964. In 1965, the station was renamed WFME and in 1966 Family Stations bought 94.7 FM and began airing religious programming 24/7.

Call Sign Origin: Karen Johnson at Family Stations headquarters in an email dated June 28, 2000, says the call letters stand for "Where Faith Means Everything".

For decades, WFME's programmimg was doctrinally based on Conservative Reformed and traditional Baptist doctrines. The station always steered clear of Charismatic and "signs and wonders" style Christian programming. Unlike most Christian stations, WFME has always steered clear of political issues. The music on the station has always been traditional Christian. In recent years, most of the outside ministries have been removed from the station. Doctrinally, the station has shifted to an even more ultra-fundamentalist orientation. The ministry of Family Radio, along with WFME, now states that the era of the Church has ended. The General Manager (Harold Camping) asserts that faithful believers should leave their churches, not be baptised, and not partake of communion. Instead of attendance at church, listeners are encouraged to tune into Family Radio and send their tithes and offerings to it. Harold Camping, whose 1994 date for the end of the world, did not come true, has set new dates of May 21, 2011 for the Rapture, and October 21, 2011 for the end of the world.
