Overview

The country's debut at Eurovision was at the Eurovision Song Contest 1998, however the country first took part at the Eurovision Song Contest 1996 pre-selection. Their song, "Samo ti" (Само ти) sung by Kaliopi, failed to qualify to the final.

FYR Macedonia's best result was in 2006, when Elena Risteska sang "Ninanajna" (Нинанајна) in Athens, Greece and came 12th. Despite never coming in the top 10 in the final, FYR Macedonia managed to enter every final up to 2008. Their record of entering every final from the semi-final was broken in 2008, when the jury vote used in the semi-final chose Sweden to pass to the final, with FYR Macedonia having come 10th in the televote.

Macedonian Radio-Television (MKRTV) has used the Skopje Fest festival to select the Macedonian entry since the country's debut, with MKRTV also broadcasting Eurovision for the Macedonian people.

Prior declaring independence in 1991, as a constituent country of SFR Yugoslavia, the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, participated in the Yugoslav pre-selection called "Jugovizija" along the other Yugoslav federal units. A somewhat exception occurred when Maja Odžaklievska won the Yugoslav competition in 1980, [http://free-st.t-com.hr/eurodalmatia/statistika.htm Jugovizija statistics by year] , "Eurodalmatia" official ESC fan club, Dalmatia, Croatia] but she did not perform at the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 due to the Yugoslav decicison not to participate that year.
