Glenn "G.T." Thompson, 48, is the 2008 Republican nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives in Pennsylvania's 5th congressional district. The seat is currently held by Republican John E. Peterson, [http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/01/03/politics/politico/thecrypt/main3669984.shtml who announced he will not seek reelection] .

On April 11, 2008, [http://www.centredaily.com/news/breaking_news/story/517572.html Peterson endorsed Thompson] as his choice to replace him.

Life and career

Thompson, the son of a Navy veteran, has worked for 26 years as a therapist, Rehabilitation Services manager and a licensed Nursing Home Administrator in Lycoming County, Pa., and has served for six years as chairman of the Centre County, Pa., Republican Committee. He has spent 25 years as a member or president of the Howard, Pa., Volunteer Fire Co. and also actively volunteers as a fire fighter, EMT, and rescue technician.

A lifelong resident of Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District, Thompson has also served in various state and regional positions with the Boy Scouts of America, the Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks Society, the Private Industry Council for the Central Corridor (PICCC), and the Central Pennsylvania Work Force Investment Board.

In addition to serving as chair of the Centre County GOP, Thompson's political career includes six years on the Bald Eagle Area School District Board of Education, three terms on the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee, and serving on the delegation for the 5th Congressional District at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Thompson also twice ran for a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives representing the 76th District.

Thompson holds a bachelor's degree from Penn State and master’s degree from Temple University. He lives in Howard, Pa., with his wife of 28 years, Penny Ammerman-Thompson. Together, they have three grown children.

2008 campaign

Thompson is the 2008 Republican nominee for U.S. Representative from ushr|Pennsylvania|5. An open seat, he is running against Democratic nominee Mark B. McCracken and Green Party Donald Wilson.

Thompson supports the U.S. involvement in Iraq, is pro-life, and vows not to back new or expanded taxes. He is against a state initiative to levy tolls on Interstate 80 and advocates a "common sense" approach to health care with less government regulation and expanded older adult Medicare access. He supports alternative fuels and eliminating reliance on foreign energy.
