Howard is a borough in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 699 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Howard is located at coord|41|0|50|N|77|39|17|W|region:US_type:city|display=inline (41.013857, -77.654809)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 699 people, 282 households, and 210 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,022.3 people per square mile (771.1/km²). There were 295 housing units at an average density of 853.5/sq mi (325.4/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.71% White and 0.29% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.43% of the population.

There were 282 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $42,981, and the median income for a family was $47,885. Males had a median income of $34,205 versus $23,393 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,549. About 1.0% of families and 1.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
