Samuel W. Wolfson High School is a public high school in the Duval County Public School district, located on the south side of Jacksonville, Florida.

History

The school was designed by Jacksonville architect, Taylor Hardwick and opened in 1963 for grades 10-12 and graduated its first class in 1966. In 1989, the 9th grade was moved from Junior High Schools to Senior High Schools, county-wide. Sixth grade was moved from Elementary Schools to Junior High Schools, which were renamed, "Middle Schools".

Namesake

The school is named after Samuel W. Wolfson, a Jacksonville civic leader and businessman in the 1950’s and early 1960’s who died suddenly in 1963. The Wolfson Family Foundation gave millions of dollars to Jacksonville medical, educational, research and religious entities beginning in 1946 with $500,000 to build Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Improvement

The school’s letter grade in 2006, based on FCAT test scores, was a “D”. Wolfson was one of 11 schools nation-wide selected by the College Board for inclusion in the EXCELerator "School Improvement Model" program beginning the 2006-2007 school year. The project was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
