An EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesellocomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between November1965 and December1971 . Power was provided by anEMD 645E3 16-cylinder engine which generated 3000horsepower (2.2 MW).1,187 examples of this locomotive model were built for American railroads, 16 were built for Canadian railroads, and 18 were built for Mexican railroads. Various passenger versions were also built.
