Fishergate

Fishergate

Fishergate is one of the centre wards of York, England. It is situated directly south of the city walls, on the east bank of the River Ouse, north of Fulford. On its north west corner is the confluence point of the Foss and the Ouse. This area is protected from floods by the Foss Barrier. The area between the Ouse and Fishergate is part of the New Walk.

In the 2003 local elections, the Green Party made its breakthrough in York, winning both Fishergate council seats by a significant majority and these seats were held in the 2007 local election.

Important roads in Fishergate include Barbican road, Broadway, Cemetery Road, Fawcett Street, Fishergate, Fulford Road, and Paragon street. The area contains the Barbican Centre, a leisure centre that has hosted major sporting and music events but is currently subject to a controversial redevelopment. The ward has just under 8000 inhabitants. Local schools in the area are Fishergate School and St. Georges Primary and Junior School.

In Anglian times the area was the city's major manufacturing and trading centre. It was until 1971 the location of the city's Cattle Market.Timefact
