Rational Alchemy is a radio show broadcast every Saturday night on KRFC Fort Collins 88.9 FM (Community Powered radio, also available live on the internet at the [http://krfcfm.org KRFC web site] (listen now link). We are also making the shows available from this web site as downloads. Rational Alchemy is based on an idea by Brian and Nigel. But it took our producer Jamie to drag Brian over to the Radio Station to record what is now know as Episode 0. (There is no Episode 1!).

At the end of each broadcast of Rational Alchemy the three of us have a discussion on the show itself and often wander into different discussion topics. The best of these "chats" are also being made available on this web site.

As we grow we hope to have an active forum for discussing ideas. What is important to note is that all ideas heard on the broadcasts are not to be taken as a factual point. The entire idea is for you to question what is the truth, and it is "out there".

The Beliefs of Rational Alchemy

Occam's razor (sometimes spelled Ockham's razor) is a principle attributed to the 14th-century English logician and Franciscan friar William of Ockham.

The principle states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. The principle is often expressed in Latin as the lex parsimoniae ("law of parsimony" or "law of succinctness": "entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", roughly translated as "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity".

This is often paraphrased as "All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best." In other words, when multiple competing theories are equal in other respects, the principle recommends selecting the theory that introduces the fewest assumptions and postulates the fewest entities. It is in this sense that Occam's razor is usually understood.
