Cohen holds his
B.A. degree inMusic andDrama fromRipon College andM.F.A. inMusic Composition from theState University of New York at Purchase .He received adoctorate incomposition from theCity University of New York , where he studied withThea Musgrave ,Bruce Saylor , andDavid Del Tredici .Awards

Cohen's work includes
music fororchestra , chamber ensembles, solo instruments, andvoice . His pieces on compact disc include Autumn Morning for orchestra (Vienna Modern Masters), Duo-Partita forcello andguitar (Artek ),Grace forpiano solo (New Ariel),Sonata forTrumpet and Piano ("Song of Myself") and "Wings of Desire" forflugelhorn and piano (Capstone ). He has written incidental scores forfilm s andoff-Broadway plays, and has arrangeddance music for five Broadway musicals.Performance career

Cohen has been teaching various courses at

author of "Howard Hanson inTheory andPractice " (Praeger /Greenwood ) and the popularchildren 's book "That's So Funny I Forgot to Laugh!" (Scholastic), which has sold more than half a million copies, and co-author of "Writing Musical Theater" (Palgrave Macmillan ). His scholarly papers in theory andmusical theater has been presented atconference s inNew York ,Hawaii , andGermany .Cohen has had articles published in
