MATRIC (Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research and Innovation Center) is a fast-growing non-profit research organization based in South Charleston, West Virginia.[2] Opening in 2003 at the Small Business Incubator[3] of the Charleston Area Alliance [4], MATRIC has expanded to more than 70 employees with offices in Morgantown and South Charleston, West Virginia, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.[5]

MATRIC Chairman of the Board of Directors, Paul. E. Arbogast, addresses the audience at a recent public meeting.[5]

Founded in 2003 by retired scientists from Dow Chemical’s Union Carbide subsidiary[6], MATRIC was established along the lines of the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina to preserve the science and engineering talent recruited to the Charleston area by the chemical industry.[7] MATRIC has emulated RTI by spinning off several companies and licensing new technologies to other companies, as well as completing several research projects for government agencies.[7]

MATRIC has relocated to the five-story laboratory Building 740 at the South Charleston Technology Park.[4] In 2008 MATRIC announced the formation of an engineering subsidiary, Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering LLC (MATE), to serve the chemical and gas production industry in West Virginia and surrounding states.[7]

Organization Structure

MATRIC has organized its work into three business areas.[8] The Chemical and Environmental Technology Business does research into the chemical processes and catalysts needed to grow and protect American industry. The Health and Life Sciences Business provides research on cellular and molecular microbiology applications for real life needs. Advanced software solutions for NASA and other U.S. federal agencies are the focus of the Advanced Engineering Systems Business.

MATRIC has established several subsidiaries to help conduct its business activities.[8] Mid-Atlantic Commercial Research LLC (MCR) is a for-profit subsidiary[9] that enables MATRIC to serve commercial clients. Mid-Atlantic Holding LLC (MAH) commercializes the inventions and spin-off technologies developed by MATRIC, and Mid-Atlantic Technical Consulting LLC (MATC) provides professional consultation in several technical fields. The recently acquired National Institute of Chemical Studies (NICS) helps communities manage certain risks associated with the chemical industry.
