Cinco de Moustache is an annual festival held in mid-Michigan and Idaho. The festival alternates between the Lansing and Armada areas of Michigan. It is usually celebrated on the Saturday closest to May 5 of each year, replacing the traditional Mexican Cinco de Mayo festivities. The festival borrows its name from an interlude between the Less Than Jake songs "Richard Allen George... No, It's Just Cheez" and "Scott Farcas Takes It on the Chin" from their Hello Rockview album.[1] The band itself held Cinco de Moustache celebrations in 1997 and 2008.[2] The festival began in 2003 and is now in its eighth year. Burt Reynolds is the unofficial icon of the festival.
Cinco de Moustache generally includes live music, drinking games, and karaoke. Male attendees of the festival generally sport moustaches of the handlebar or "law enforcement" variety. Female attendees are encouraged to fabricate a moustache to add to the festival's ambiance. Rather than drinking cerveza, participants generally consume macro-brewed pilseners such as PBR, Bud Light, and Miller Lite.
Several other "Cinco de Mustache" (an alternate spelling) events have spawned across the U.S.A. From New York City to Texas people seem to find this holiday a great excuse to hang out with friends while enjoying live music and cheap beer.
Other Cinco de Mustache celebrations, such at the one celebrated annually in Millcreek, Utah, are simply in celebration of facial hair, and have nothing to do with Burt Reynolds or Less Than Jake. Prizes are often given for the best or most creative mustaches (either real or fake)[3].
