Bridport is a town in Addison County, Vermont, United States. The town was founded October 9, 1761. The population was 1,235 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 46.2 square miles (119.8 km²), of which, 44.0 square miles (113.9 km²) of it is land and 2.3 square miles (5.9 km²) of it (4.89%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,235 people, 456 households, and 343 families residing in the town. The population density was 28.1 people per square mile (10.8/km²). There were 553 housing units at an average density of 12.6/sq mi (4.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.30% White, 0.24% Native American, 0.40% Asian, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.08% of the population.

There were 456 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.8% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 107.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $44,531, and the median income for a family was $48,542. Males had a median income of $28,839 versus $23,950 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,720. About 3.4% of families and 6.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Children in grades Kindergarten through 6 Grade attend Bridport Central School at the village center of Bridport, grades 7 and 8 attend Middlebury Union Middle School, and grades 9-12 attend Middlebury Union High School in Middlebury.
