Geography
Syracuse is located at coor dms|41|5|3|N|112|3|48|W|city (41.084167, -112.063426)GR|1, at an approximate elevation of 4,240 feet (1,290 m).
According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²), none of which is covered with water. The city is located on the eastern side of theGreat Salt Lake . Syracuse, like many other places in Utah and surrounding desert states, has hot, dry summers, and cold, snowy winters. Spring is the wettest season.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 9,398 people, 2,490 households, and 2,263 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,078.9 people per square mile (416.6/km²). There were 2,601 housing units at an average density of 298.6/sq mi (115.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.81% White, 1.40% Asian, 0.43% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.65% of the population.There were 2,490 households out of which 60.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 83.3% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 9.1% were non-families. 7.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.8 and the average family size was 3.99.
In the city the population was spread out with 39.8% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 14.9% from 45 to 64, and 3.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $58,223, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,346 versus $24,792 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $16,989. About 2.1% of families and 2.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 2.9% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.Commercial Development
In the Spring of 2006, a large national commercial developer began construction on a new Town Center which is located on the land south of
Syracuse Jr. High School and within walking distance of the city offices, police and fire stations, community center, and many of the city's houses. The Town Center Development will include many large retail chains such as aStarbucks ,Wendy's (announced),Checker Auto Parts ,Baskin-Robbins ,Godfather's Pizza ,Papa Murphy's Take-and-Bake Pizza,Quiznos ,Taco Del Mar (out of business) ,Gandolfo's , andThe UPS Store . Some other small locally-owned businesses have also located in this establishment, including Artichoke Fields (out of business), Happy Rabbit Snow & Skate (Moved to Newgate Mall inOgden, Utah ), and The Mobile Source (an exclusiveT-Mobile dealer). Lots on Antelope Drive are also available, offering big box, mid-box, and small business properties. A November 2007 vote overturned a decision to block the serving of alcohol in the city, as citizens hoped to attract high-quality "sit-down" restaurants.
