Bellmead is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,214 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Bellmead is located at coor dms|31|35|48|N|97|5|48|W|city (31.596765, -97.096627)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 square miles (16.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 9,214 people, 3,367 households, and 2,333 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,478.2 people per square mile (571.0/km²). There were 3,727 housing units at an average density of 597.9/sq mi (231.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 68.87% White, 14.62% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 13.18% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.82% of the population.

There were 3,367 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,189, and the median income for a family was $31,927. Males had a median income of $25,253 versus $17,463 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,100. About 16.1% of families and 19.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.4% of those under age 18 and 11.6% of those age 65 or over.
