Whitney is a town in Hill County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,833 at the 2000 census.

Whitney is a rural lakeside community, and site of the very first bass fishing tournament. Created by the local newspaper, it took place on Lake Whitney in 1955 [ [http://www.fishingworld.com/News/Read.php?ArtID=000022285 FishingWorld.com - News Center ] ] with 73 teams participating.

Geography

Whitney is located at coor dms|31|57|3|N|97|19|15|W|city (31.950876, -97.320716)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,833 people, 684 households, and 443 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,132.3 people per square mile (436.9/km²). There were 770 housing units at an average density of 475.6/sq mi (183.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 88.11% White, 7.09% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 2.73% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.27% of the population.

There were 684 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% were married couples living together, 15.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.11.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 71.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,174, and the median income for a family was $30,833. Males had a median income of $28,036 versus $18,487 for females. The per capita income for the town was $12,772. About 17.9% of families and 21.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.7% of those under age 18 and 17.5% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The Town of Whitney is served by the Whitney Independent School District.
