Smiley is a city in Gonzales County, Texas, United States. The population was 453 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Smiley is located at coor dms|29|16|10|N|97|38|13|W|city (29.269402, -97.636850)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 453 people, 178 households, and 126 families residing in the city. The population density was 869.8 people per square mile (336.4/km²). There were 202 housing units at an average density of 387.9/sq mi (150.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.06% White, 0.66% Native American, 20.75% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 61.59% of the population.

There were 178 households out of which 36.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 15.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 105.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,591, and the median income for a family was $25,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $15,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,823. About 19.0% of families and 27.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.3% of those under age 18 and 20.4% of those age 65 or over. Smiley has two cafes, no gas stations, a Wells Fargo bank and one blinking traffic signal at the intersection of hiway 87 and farm to market road 108.

Education

The City of Smiley is served by the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District.
