The novel takes place thousands of years after the events of "
First Lensman ". Lensman Kimball Kinnison travels to Arisia for advanced training in the use of the "Lens", a pseudo-life device which grants its user telepathic powers. Kimball uses this training with great success against the Boskonian pirates –only to find out that the pirates are a front for an enemy of far greater scope.Publication history
