Bronte is a town in Coke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,076 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Bronte is located at coor dms|31|53|13|N|100|17|42|W|city (31.887046, -100.294947)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,076 people, 426 households, and 293 families residing in the town. The population density was 748.0 people per square mile (288.5/km²). There were 502 housing units at an average density of 349.0/sq mi (134.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 90.06% White, 0.19% Native American, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 8.55% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.07% of the population.

There were 426 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 30.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,150, and the median income for a family was $37,625. Males had a median income of $30,769 versus $14,135 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,869. About 10.4% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.4% of those under age 18 and 11.4% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The Town of Bronte is served by the Bronte Independent School District.
