Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations

Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations

The Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations is the representative of the Roman Catholic Church at the United Nations. The diplomatic mission does not have full ambassador status and thus cannot vote--a decision it has freely taken--but the Holy See may choose to become a full member at any time.

Since Switzerland changed its status to become a full-fledged member state of the UN in 2002, the Holy See – which, per international law, remains a politically neutral entityFact|date=May 2008 – is the one state to sit in the UN as a non-voting delegation with "permanent observer" status.
