The College serves more than 540,000 residents in an 11-county service area including Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Franklin, Lincoln, Moore, Rutherford, Van Buren, White, and Warren counties in southern middle Tennessee.
Motlow College is one of thirteen community college governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents, the sixth largest system of higher education in the nation. Affiliate TBR institutions include six universities and 26 technology centers. The TBR educates more than 180,000 students each year.

History & Leadership
The Motlow family donated 187 acres (0.76 km2) of land on which the college is built in Moore County, Tennessee; subsequently, the college bears the family name—Motlow College. Motlow honors Senator Motlow; his sister, Mrs. James Boyd; his brothers, Connor, Robert, and D.E.; his mother, Mrs. Lem Motlow; and his uncle, Tom Motlow for their significant contributions. The family are descendants of Jack Daniel, the original proprietor of Jack Daniel Distillery.
Dr. MaryLou Apple began serving as Motlow’s fifth and current president in 2006. Previous presidents include Dr. Sam Ingram, Dr. Harry Wagner, Dr. A. Frank Glass, and Dr. Arthur L. Walker, Jr.
Locations
Meeting the community college mission of taking education to the people, Motlow has expanded its original single location campus beyond Moore County by strategically establishing permanent buildings in satellite communities. Today, over 5,000 students attend the original and the satellite campuses in:
- Moore County
- McMinnville
- Fayetteville
- Smyrna
- Sparta
The implementation of the Dual/Joint Enrollment Program for high school students heightens access throughout the service area.
Academics
Degree Programs
The College offers 51 areas of study and awards the following Level 1 degrees as well as a certificate of credit program:
- associate of arts
- associate of science
- associate of science in teaching
- associate of applied science, Nursing
The College’s three-fold programs provide degree programs for:
- students who plan to transfer to upper-division colleges and universities;
- degree and non-degree programs in business, industry, government, early childhood education, and health professions designed to develop job readiness skills and competencies for students who plan to enter the workforce; and
- public service, lifelong learning, and workforce development programs to promote personal enrichment and economic and community development.
The Honors Scholar program attracts some of the areas highest academic achievers. The creditable collegiate program is recognized for its rigor and integrity. A developmental studies program provides the needed support to move students who are academically deficient to collegiate level studies.
Motlow State Community College has a distinguished Nursing Education Program and has graduated over 1,120 registered nurses.
Admission to the nursing program at Motlow State Community College is contingent upon completion of Anatomy & Physiology I and II with a grade of "C" or higher within the last 5 years, as well as a HESI exam score of 75% or higher.
Motlow, having recently received an expansion grant has recently taken on a new construction project which promises to double the size of the McMinnville center adding a new Anatomy & Physiology Lab, Library, High-Tech Classrooms, as well as a nursing classroom and lab. Effective Fall 2008, Motlow State Mcminnville will be hosting its very own nursing program. Currently, the only Motlow campuses to offer nursing are that of Moore County and Smyrna.
2+2 Elementary Education
In the 2+2 Elementary Education Program, successful candidates complete an Associate of Science in Teaching degree at Motlow College and transition immediately into the Tennessee Tech program. Students then complete their junior and senior years of college through Tennessee Tech without leaving the Motlow Moore County campus or McMinnville Center.
Adult College Express Program
The Adult College Express (ACE) Program is for the working adult who is mature, highly motivated, an independent learner, and determined to complete a college degree within two years. The ACE Program is a fast-track, general studies degree program that can be completed in 24 months and is transferable to a four-year university or college. Most classes meet one night per week for four hours. Additionally, students must commit to a weekly study night. For more information on the ACE Program, call 1-800-654-4877, ext. 1696.
2+2 Criminal Justice
Through a new partnership, Motlow College and Tennessee State University now offer a 2+2 Criminal Justice Program. Students will complete an associate's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Motlow College, after which, students will complete their junior and senior years enrolled at TSU. All classes will be held on the Motlow Moore County campus. Classes are offered in a variety of formats, including online, traditional, interactive, and hybrid. Accreditation
Motlow is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Level 1 associate degree.
