Monroe Township is a township in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 20.9 square miles (54.0 km²), of which, 20.7 square miles (53.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.53%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 1,836 people, 717 households, and 511 families residing in the township. The population density was 88.5 people per square mile (34.2/km²). There were 785 housing units at an average density of 37.8/sq mi (14.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.13% White, 0.22% African American, 0.11% Asian, 0.11% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population.

There were 717 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. while 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the township the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $36,094, and the median income for a family was $42,188. Males had a median income of $30,789 versus $22,798 for females. The per capita income for the township was $18,177. About 6.7% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
