Johan Jeremiassen was born in Hviteseid to teacher's seminary leader Knut Johan Jeremiassen and Ingeborg Ellse, née Helseth. The family moved to
Drammen around 1855.Johan moved to Kristiania in the 1860s, where he made a career in manufacturing, and later to Porsgrund in 1872 to become involved in shipping.b] His brotherHerman Jeremiassen moved with him and became a businessperson, as well as mayor.
