The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) is an independent school in Dallas, Texas.

History

The School was founded in 1974 by Dallas-area leaders and The Reverend Stephen B. Swann who remains the current headmaster. In 1995 ESD merged with St. Michael and now offers grades Beginner (age 3) through high school.

The founders of the Episcopal School of Dallas envisioned a college-preparatory curriculum that would prepare students for a changing world, delivered within a framework of commitment to Judeo-Christian values. Central to this vision is a belief in the inherent worth of each child. This belief underlies every educational endeavor at the School and is expressed in the individualized teaching and the supportive learning environment that challenges students to strive for personal excellence.

Campus

ESD is located on three campuses, continues to develop, currently with 248,000 sq ft (23,000 m²). in facilities. The campus housing the Middle and Upper Schools is located on Midway Road and spans more than 39 acres. The first building, the gymnasium, was completed in the late 1970s. Classes were held in the gym until the main building was finished in 1981. A major expansion of the main building was completed in 1986. This expansion included a library, publication suite, fine arts facilities, classrooms and offices. The Cook Math and Science building was completed in 1994. It houses the science labs, math classrooms and two computer labs. All Saints Chapel was opened in 2003; previously, daily chapel had been held in the gym. The Susan M. Frank Center for Arts and Humanities Building opened in 2005. In addition to humanities classrooms and expanded music facilities, it offers a state-of-the-art proscenium theater, a black box theater, ceramic studio, and a darkroom/digital imaging suite. The latest additions to the Merrell Road campus are a 55,000 sq ft (5,100 m²). center for arts and humanities and a new stadium complete with state-of-the-art athletic turf, locker rooms, and accommodations for home and visiting fans. ESD's rural outdoor education center, located in northern Collin County, is on 165 acres (0.67 km²). The plans for a new Steven B. Swann Athletic and Wellness Center have been finalized, and groundbreaking is set to begin in fall 2008.

Students

ESD has an enrollment of more than 1100 students, including nearly 400 in the High School. The school accepts students from a variety of faiths and backgrounds. Graduates attend a variety of prestigious universities across the nation. Graduates of the 2007-2008 class plan to attend universities such as University of Virginia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Trinity University, Wesleyan University, Davidson College, Vanderbilt University, University of Southern California, Georgetown University, University of Notre Dame, and University of Texas Plan II.

Faculty

The Upper School has 69 faculty members; 57 have master's degrees. Three faculty members have a Ph.D.; three members are Ph.D. candidates. Two members are PH.D. candidates and one member has a J.D.

Stephen B. Swann

The Reverend Stephen B. Swann is the founding Rector and Headmaster of the Episcopal School of Dallas. He has been a member of the School's Board of Directors since its inception in 1974.

A native of Texas, Father Swann received a Master of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He attended the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

The Episcopal School of Dallas prepares young men and women for lives of intellectual discovery, integrity, and purpose. The School develops the unique talent and potential in each student and embraces sound learning, discipline, and faith as essential elements of an educated conscience.
