New Milford Township is a township in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.2 square miles (117.2 km²), of which, 44.5 square miles (115.3 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²) of it (1.59%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,859 people, 720 households, and 527 families residing in the township. The population density was 41.8 people per square mile (16.1/km²). There were 1,137 housing units at an average density of 25.5/sq mi (9.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.01% White, 0.59% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.29% of the population.

There were 720 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 21.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the township the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $32,778, and the median income for a family was $38,125. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $22,344 for females. The per capita income for the township was $15,927. About 7.2% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.5% of those under age 18 and 11.1% of those age 65 or over.

Bluestone

The New Milford area is dominated by stone quarries. Bluestone is of particular value to not only New Milford Township, but also Susquehanna County. The biggest supplier of bluestone and the major stone quarry in the area is B&S Quarries.
