Hurley then made the move to Christian Brothers College Cork where he played Senior Cup rugby and was victorious in 2003. When Hurley left school he joined UCC where he remained for two years. He then went on to join Munster as an Academy player. Hurley then made his Munster debut in 2006 where he played the full 80 mins against Border Reivers in the Celtic (now Magners) league.

He earned his first senior Irish cap in February 2008 as part of the A team that suffered defeat to Scotland A (67–7).[3][4] Hurley was also a member of the Ireland Churchill Cup squad [5] that won the plate final at this years competition (2008) in Canada and the USA.[6]
