Richard L. Ottinger was born in
New York City , the son ofLawrence Ottinger founder of U.S. Plywood, and nephew of Albert Ottinger, who was also a politician, although of the Republican Party. He attended public schools ofScarsdale, New York and graduated from theLoomis School ,Windsor, Connecticut in 1946. He received a bachelor of arts degree fromCornell University in 1950 and graduated fromHarvard Law School in 1953. He also studiedinternational law atGeorgetown University .He served in the
United States Air Force from 1955 to 1957, and was discharged as acaptain . He was admitted to theNew York bar and practiced international and corporate law. He was one of the founders and the second staff member of thePeace Corps , serving as director of programs for the west coast ofSouth America from 1961 to 1964.Political career
In the 1964 election, he was elected as a Democrat to the 89th Congress and was re-elected twice. In 1970, he gave up his House seat to become the Democratic nominee for the Senate. In that race, Ottinger split the liberal vote with the Republican and Liberal candidate,
Charles Goodell , and was defeated by Conservative Party nomineeJames L. Buckley . Ottinger finished second.He returned to the House of Representatives from a different district in the 1974 election, and was re-elected to the four succeeding Congresses, retiring in 1985.
Subsequent career
After retiring from Congress, Ottinger became a professor at
Pace University School of Law , founding anenvironmental law program there, and served as the law school dean from 1994 to 1999. He currently serves as Dean Emeritus. [http://www.law.pace.edu/facbios/ottinger.html]References
