History

Monody was initially conceived by a shared love for electronic music, and a desire to push the known envelope of what can be accomplished in a live situation. Monody was formed in the autumn of 2006 in the wake of the disbandment of 3 other groups. Fueled by the shared commitment to hone their respective skills, Monody's members journeyed into Portland, Oregon's electronic music scene.

With a writing style laden with pop sensibility, Monody has been able to capture the attention of electronic music fans local and abroad. With signature vocal harmonies, thundering drums, and edgy synth lines, the band has been able to leave listeners with a satisfaction typically reserved for seasoned veterans within their genre.

Unsatisfied with the status quo, Monody’s philosophy behind their live performances has always been about providing their fans with an unforgettable experience. This is evident within the additional musical flourishes the band adds to each show, akin to a traditional “rock” band. The sheer force of an accomplished, acoustic drummer provides much of the driving force during their performances.

In an effort to reinvent the live experience, Monody has also developed an iPhone application called MonodyFans that allows fans to use their devices to interactively perform with the band during a live set. The band feels that enriching the experience for each fan in this way is going to be a catalyst in the evolution of live musical performance.

On January 24, 2008, Monody was featured in an Oregon Public Broadcasting segment [1] on the construction in Portland, Oregon. Daniel Edgar (member) was recognized for his use various construction sounds in a number of Monody songs. The song 'Beneath Andromeda' was featured in the segment.

Monody opened for Obscenity Trial (band) and Spetsnaz (band) at the Portland stop of their 2008 US tour on November 25, 2008.[2]

On March 8, 2009, an interview with Monody was posted on the Portland music guide, Evy Metal.[3] The interview covers topics such as their musical background, writing process, and live performances.

Remote Music,[4] the German electronic music label, announced that Monody has joined their roster on July 3, 2009

Monody's debut album, "Of Iron and Clay" was released on Remote Music in April 2011.

Geoff Tripoli

Geoff comes from a musical background somewhat unlike the Monody sound. It started with piano lessons as a child and on to the electric guitar as a teenager. He was a member of a couple rock bands over the years, but his true passion comes from building on his home studio and becoming a skilled engineer and producer of his own and other musician’s projects. His ongoing side project, Entium, occasionally releases tracks that are on the electronica side of things. For Monody, Geoff is undertaking his first all vocal role. He wants to bring a unique vocal sound to the genre, while still staying true to this style of music. Lyrically, he wants to convey a somewhat clouded message in an artful way, without being too abstract. His vocal influences include artists like Dave Gahan, Jean-Luc De Meyer and Peter Murphy.

David Battrick

David has been a long standing fixture in the Portland, Oregon music scene. He has been a past member of Monochrome, Written in Ashes, and Pharrah Phosphate. Notably, David spent 3 years studying percussion under the tutelage of Roger Allen (of the Portland Philharmonic fame). According to Dave, as a drummer, his musical career has been just another chapter in the Spinal Tap movie of life.

Daniel Edgar

Daniel spent much of his early days growing up in a small Oregon town tinkering with drums, various noise making electronics, synthesizers and samplers. Despite not having much musical inspiration “off the shelf”, he found himself begging for mix tapes from family and friends who lived out of town. From an early age, he was listening to a lot of European synthpop, 80’s post-punk, and industrial music. Before Monody, Daniel spent time in several bands in different cities playing various instruments such as bass, drums and most recently guitar. Driven by a love for EBM, synthpop and Industrial music, he wanted to write and perform this kind of music in a live setting. Prior to Monody, Daniel co-founded the electronic project called Conduit, which released an album entitled “State of Being” in 2005. While he spends most of his creative energy writing songs for Monody, he still finds enjoyment helping other bands within a recording, producing, or live sound engineer role.
