Elizabeth Lane

Dame Elizabeth Kathleen Lane, DBE (1905-1988) was one of the earliest women to practise as a barrister in the UK.

Born Elizabeth Kathleen Coulborn, she was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1940. She was Assistant Recorder of Birmingham from 1953 to 1961.

In 1962 she was appointed as the first female judge in the County Court and three years later she became the first woman judge to sit in the High Court, assigned to the Family Division.

She retired in 1979 and died nine years later.
