Pennsylvania , about 10 miles (16 km) west of Scranton. The borough is in the middle of a fertile agricultural area, and some lumber and coal-mining had been carried out early on. In 1900, the population consisted of 1,948 persons; in 1910, 3,537 persons; and in 1940, 5,802 persons. The population was 5,955 at the 2000 census.Geography

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 5,955 people, 2,482 households, and 1,640 families residing in the borough. Thepopulation density was 1,278.4 people per square mile (493.4/km²). There were 2,641 housing units at an average density of 567.0/sq mi (218.8/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.69% White, 0.49% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.03% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.57% of the population.There were 2,482 households out of which 26.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the borough the population was spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $31,681, and the median income for a family was $40,050. Males had a median income of $31,569 versus $21,693 for females. The
per capita income for the borough was $16,022. About 7.6% of families and 8.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 11.1% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.References
