As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,246 people, 548 households, and 340 families residing in the borough. Thepopulation density was 784.7 people per square mile (302.6/km²). There were 604 housing units at an average density of 380.4/sq mi (146.7/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.44% White, 0.24% African American, 0.16% Native American, and 0.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.24% of the population.There were 548 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the borough the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $26,719, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $30,597 versus $19,773 for females. The
