University of Illinois at Chicago College of Business Administration

The UIC College of Business Administration (CBA) is the business school of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The faculty is divided into four departments: Accounting; Finance; Information and Decision Sciences; and, Managerial Studies (which includes entrepreneurship, management, and marketing). The CBA offers undergraduate degrees and, in the guise of the Liautaud Graduate School of Business, graduate degrees. The college is also home to eight academic institutes and centers.

The CBA should not be confused with the executive MBA program offered in Chicago by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The CBA is a fully-functioning business school, not a satellite campus nor a strictly part-time program.

College History

Business courses were first offered at the University of Illinois facility at Navy Pier in 1946. [http://www.uic.edu/cba/cba_history.html UIC-College of Business Administration ] ] The College of Business Administration (CBA) was created with the building of the original Circle Campus in 1965. The first degree was conferred the following year. Two years later, in 1968, a graduate program was established and in 1969, an MBA program was approved. The college received AACSB accreditation in 1971.

In 1982, The Circle Campus and the Medical Center were merged to form the University of Illinois at Chicago. Five years after that, a PhD program was approved for the CBA and, in 1993, the first PhD was awarded. [http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/specialcoll/ua/pdf/Grad_Col_History_1.0.pdf UIC Archives] ] With a donation from Jimmy John Liautaud, founder of the Jimmy John's restaurant chain, the Liautaud Graduate School of Business was created in 2003 to unify all graduate instruction in the college.

The first research center in the CBA was the Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, founded in 1982. [http://www.uic.edu/cba/ies/welcome.html Welcome ] ] The Center for Research in Information Management was established in 1988; and, the 1990's saw the founding of many other centers: the Center for Human Resource Management (1991), the Center for Urban Business (1992), the Center for Urban Real Estate (1996), and the Integritas Institute (1997). [http://www.integritasinstitute.org/ Integritas Institute ] ] A local extension program, the Family Business Council, was also established in the 1990s (1991). The most recent center, the International Center for Futures and Derivatives, was established in 2006 through a grant from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Degrees Offered

The CBA offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees [http://www.uic.edu/cba/Documents/CBA_Facts.pdf CBA Facts] ] . The school is accredited by the AACSB and is a member of the Graduate Management Admission Council.

Undergraduate Degrees

At the undergraduate level, a Bachelors of Science is offered in six fields: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Information and Decision Sciences, Management, and Marketing. Minors are offered in International Business; Labor Markets and Workforce Development; and, Real Estate. [http://www.uic.edu/ucat/catalog/DPML.shtml UIC Undergraduate Course Catalog] ]

Graduate Degrees

The Liautaud Graduate School of Business (LGSB, housed within the CBA) offers four master's level degrees: a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Arts in Real Estate, a Master of Science in Accounting, and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems.

MBA Program

The Liautaud MBA program offers three forms of specialization:

1) concentrations in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, international business administration, management, management information systems, marketing, operations management, and real estate;
2) joint degrees in accounting, management information systems, medicine, nursing and public health; and,
3) self-directed concentrations (with approval).

Project courses and a strong relationship with the Chicago business community are hallmarks of the LGSB. The facilities of UIC (e.g. a large medical school) let MBA students gain real-world experience: In the past two years, several teams of MBA students have won awards in national and international business plan competitions for their startup ventures. Some of these ventures are close to bringing new products to market.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 30th anniversary of the MBA program, which is highlighted by an incoming class with an average GMAT score of 611.

The LGSB also offers two doctoral degrees: a PhD in Business Administration and a PhD in Management Information Systems.
