Jorhat College

Jorhat College (Amalgamated) is an Arts College of co-education in Jorhat, India. The name by itself commemorates the history of amalgamation of two different Colleges. viz., Jorhat College and New Jorhat College. The amalgamation took place in 1970, but both of its constituents being established in 1962, the college may now rightly claim to have completed 45 years of its existence. It is a unique institution specializing in the humanities, with the facility of Major Courses in as many as eight as subjects, viz, Assamese, Economics, Education, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology. Besides, the College also offers the opportunity of pursuing a vocational course, viz, Functional English. Moreover, three UGC (University Grants Commission of India)- sponsored career-oriented add-on courses in Translation Proficiency, Tourism and Applied Sociology were also introduced from the 2005-06 session. In addition to all these a computer course was from the last academic session. The College is affiliated to Dibrugarh University and accredited by NAAC.

Academic aspects

The college imparts a two year Higher Secondary Course (HSC) and a Three year Degree Course (TDC) in Arts. Following are the notable features of the College –

Medium of teaching

The medium of teaching in Assamese but student, if he/she desires, may receive necessary instruction in English and may answer in English in any examination.

Career Oriented Courses

The College introduced three UGC sponsored Career Oriented Courses at the First Degree Level (COCFDL) in Translation Proficiency, Tourism and Applied Sociology from the 2005-06 academic session. These courses are optional and additional to the normal Degree course. The objective of these courses is to cater at least partially to the demand of the society for vocationalisaton of education facilitating self-employment opportunities for the youths. Each of these courses will be of one-year duration. Examination will be held at the close of every academic session and the successful candidates will be awarded a certificate. These Career-Oriented Courses will be open to the students of all the three years of TDC Course.

Remedial Coaching

There is special arrangement for Remedial Coaching for students, especially for those belonging to SC, ST and Minority Communities, showing poor performance in classroom or in the internal tests.

Internal Assessment

The system of internal assessment was introduced as per University guidelines from the 2005-06 session in every theory paper of more than 60 marks (Major as well as Core subjects). The internal assessment would be based on Attendance, Sessional Examinationa, and Home Assignment.

Academic Session

The academic session of the college begins in April and ends in March for the TDC 2nd Year Class. For all other classes the session begins in June and ends in May. The Tuition fee for the whole year is realized at the time of admission along with other annual dues.

Admission Procedure

The prescribed Application Form for admission may be obtained along with the Prospectus cum Academic Calendar from the College Office and the same be submitted on or before the date specified as per notification issued in the Local News Papers and the College Notice Board.

After scrutiny of the application forms, the list of selected candidates shall be notified in the College Notice Board. Students failing to admit themselves on due date will forfeit their seats. Merit is the general criterion for selection and there is provision for reservation of seats as per rules for the SC, ST, physically handicapped and sports persons.

General guidelines for students

The students admitted to the college must abide by all the rules and regulations of the college. Violation of rules, irregular attendance, irregular clearance of college dues, showing discourtesy to the teachers and staff members in any form, adoption of unfair means in Examinations are some the offences which may make students liable to face the Disciplinary Committee for disciplinary action, leading to termination of scholarship, forced transfer and even expulsion from the college. Students’ Societies and Associations shall be subject to the approval and the guidance and control of the college administration. Such Societies and Associations as have been recognized by the administration, shall only have the facilities of the college premises. The pasting or circulation of any notice or bulletin by the students anywhere in the college shall require the prior approval of the Principal. No person shall be invited to address a meeting in the college without the prior permission of the college authority. Students shall keep their bicycles, scooters or motorcycles locked only in the shed provided for this purpose. All students have to maintain their uniforms prescribed for them.

College Library

The College has a rich computerized Library with Reading Room facility. Most of the daily papers, journals and magazines are available in the Reading Room. The students must abide by the rules of the library.

Book Bank

The College has the facility of a Book Bank for the benefit of the poor students. It is a provision for lending textbooks only to economically backward students on merit basis. To avail the benefit of the same the students will have to apply in a given form to be obtained from the Librarian along with a certificate of income from the local SDE or Mauzadar. The beneficiaries will be selected purely on merit basis from among the applicants. The textbooks will be issued for one academic year and the same will have to be returned by the beneficiaries before the issuing of the admittance card for the final examination.

Departmental Library

The members of the teaching staff have at their own initiative launched a modest effort towards establishing eight departmental libraries for the benefit of the major students of each department.

tudents’ Union

The students have their Union under the name and style of Jorhat College Students' Union which is the general body of the students of the College. The union functions in accordance with its constitution. The Union Fund is derived from the contribution of the students. Office bearers of the Union Executives are elected annually.

Games & Sports

Outdoor and indoor games and sports facilities are available for the students. Outstanding performers are sponsored by the college for inter college and university sports competitions.

Occasions

Saraswati Puja, College Week, Freshers’ Day are the occasions held and celebrated regularly every year. There are also other programs held throughout the year.

Magazine

The college magazine is brought out annually to encourage original writing and literary activities among the students. The annual souvenir of the college is JCIAN and the wall magazine is PRERONA. Various departments also publish their Journal/Wall magazines etc. on their own.
