Dirk Frederik Mudge (born 16 January, 1928 in Otjiwarongo) is a Namibian farmer and former politician. He was a member of the Constituent Assembly and first National Assembly from 1989-1994. He broke with the National Party and sided with the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance of Namibia. He is a wealthy White Namibian farmer by profession.[1]
Political career
He was Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1980 to 1983, when he resigned due to a lack of progess in independence talks.[2] Joining the Transitional Government of National Unity upon its founding in June 1985, Mudge was chairman of the TGNU in 1986 and 1988.
In 1984, Mudge petitioned the apartheid South African government for the release of Namibian leader Andimba Toivo ya Toivo.[3]
Mudge was the chairman of DTA during the 1989 election to the Constituent Assembly.[4]
Family
Dirk Mudge is married to Stienie Jacobs. They have five children, sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mudge is the father of fellow politician Henk Mudge.
