Edward Ralph Wickham

Ralph Edward Wickham (1911 - 1994) was a long serving Bishop of Middleton [ The Times, Tuesday, Oct 13, 1959; pg. 12; Issue 54590; col C New Bishop Suffragan Of Middleton ] . Born on 3 November 1911 and educated at London University , he was ordained in 1939. His first post was as Chaplain at the Royal Ordnance factory at Swynnerton. His subsequent experience was largely based in industrial areas [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and included a nine year stint as Canon Residentiary at Sheffield Cathedral [The Times, Saturday, Jun 29, 1957; pg. 8; Issue 53880; col D] . From 1959 he was a Suffragan Bishop until his retirement in 1982. A noted ecumenicist he wrote widely on the churches role in a changing world [”Church and people in an industrial city”(1957);”Encounter with modern society”(1964); "Growth, Justice and Work”(1985)] .
