Ferguson Township is a township in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,063 at the 2000 census. Most of the agricultual research for the Penn State University, located in nearby State College, Pennsylvania, is at the Russell E. Larson Research Center located in the western part of Ferguson Township.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 48.1 square miles (124.5 km²), all of it land.

Ferguson Township is bordered by Halfmoon Township and Patton Townships to the northwest, State College to the northeast, Harris Township to the southeast and Blair County to the south.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 14,063 people, 5,511 households, and 3,438 families residing in the township. The population density was 292.6 people per square mile (113.0/km²). There were 5,699 housing units at an average density of 118.6/sq mi (45.8/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 87.88% White, 2.40% African American, 0.11% Native American, 7.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.82% of the population.

There were 5,511 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the township the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 17.0% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $46,703, and the median income for a family was $62,461. Males had a median income of $43,131 versus $26,796 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,724. About 6.4% of families and 14.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.4% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.
