Richard Malone was born in Salem,
Massachusetts , and raised in Hamilton and Beverly; he has one sister, Harriet, who teachesArt atSt. John's Preparatory School in Danvers. He graduated from St. John's Prep in 1964, and then attendedCardinal O'Connell Seminary in Jamaica Plain, and St. John's Seminary in Boston, from where he obtained with his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and in Divinity, as well as his Master's in Theology. Malone was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Humberto Medeiros onMay 20 ,1972 , and then served as associate pastor of [http://www.catholic-church.org/st-patricks/ St. Patrick Parish] in Stoneham until 1974.He taught at
St. Clement High School in Somerville (1974-1976), and at Xaverian High School in Westwood (1976-1979), where he also served as achaplain . In 1979, Malone joined the faculty of his "alma mater " of St. John Seminary, teaching religious and theological studies and serving as registrar and dean until 1990. In addition to his duties at theseminary , he was also a part-time chaplain at Wellesley andRegis College s, and ateacher at Emmanuel College. He obtained his doctorate in theology fromBoston University in 1981, and hisLicentiate of Sacred Theology fromWeston Jesuit School of Theology in 1990.He was assigned to the [http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~csa/ Harvard-Radcliffe Catholic Student Center] in 1990 as well, as chaplain of [http://www.stpaulparish.org/homepage.html St. Paul Parish] . January 27 ,2000 , Malone was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Boston and Titular Bishop of "Aptuca" byPope John Paul II . He received his episcopal consecration on the followingMarch 1 from Bernard Cardinal Law, with Bishops William Francis Murphy and John Boles serving as co-consecrators. Malone was later named the eleventh Bishop of Portland,Maine , onFebruary 10 ,2004 , being formally installed as such onMarch 31 of that same year.Within the
