1652

* 6 April - Jan van Riebeeck lands at the Cape and sets up a supply station and fortifications for the Dutch East India Company

1654

* The first Cape-based slave expedition is sent to Madagascar and Mozambique
* Batavian convicts and political opponents are banished to the Cape bringing with them their Islamic religion

1655

* Jan Wintervogel, a Dutch ensign, is sent by Jan van Riebeeck to scout the interior and goes as far as Saldanha Bay
* Willem Muller, a Dutch corporal, is sent by Van Riebeeck with the Khoikhoi interpreter, Autsumao, to explore the Hottentots Holland region
* Maize and Grape vines are planted in the Cape

1656

* Catharina Anthonis, becomes the first slave to be freed to marry Jan Woutersz, a Dutch settler

1657

* The first group of slaves is brought to the Cape from Angola and West Africa
* Abraham Gabbema is sent to scout the interior and explores as far as the Berg River and Paarl regions.
* Doman, the leader of the Goringhaiqua Khoikhoi, is sent to Batavia to be trained as an interpreter
* 21 February - Nine Dutch East India Company servants are freed to become free burghers "(free citizens)" and settle along the Liesbeeck River (now Rondebosch area)

1658

* A Portuguese slaver is captured and 174 slaves are taken
* May - 228 slaves from Dahomey are brought to the Cape aboard the "Hasselt" in a secret expedition. About 80 are shipped to Batavia

1659

* 2 February - The first wine is pressed from Cape grapes
* 1 May - Jan van Riebeeck establishes the Burgher Militia
* 19 May - The Khoikhoi protest against white encroachment leading to the first anti-colonial Khoikhoi-Dutch War

Births

* 6 June 1652 - Bernert Willemsz Wijlant, the first European baby, is born at the Cape
