Its name originates from the Hungarian word nyár, meaning "poplar". It is a left tributary of the river Mureş. It starts at the junction of headwaters Nirajul Mare and Nirajul Mic. It flows through the municipalities Eremitu, Vărgata, Miercurea Nirajului, Găleşti, Păsăreni, Acăţari, Crăciuneşti, Gheorghe Doja and joins the Mureş near the town Ungheni. It is fed by several smaller streams, including Călugăreni, Nirajul Mic, Dorna, Pârâul Mare, Văleni, Tirimia, Diceaiul, Hodoş, Valea, Tâmpa and Maiad.
